League of Legends

League of Legends is one of the most famous and important games in the gaming world. The game currently has a massive player base of over 100 million monthly players. It joins the history books of gaming as one of the most played games ever to exist. League of Legends stands out from the rest of the games of the same genre mainly because it has survived for over a decade now and it is still relevant. It still has a rapidly growing player base and does not seem to stop anytime soon. Another interesting fact about the game is that it holds the record for the most-watched game in the entire world. Its massive and growing viewership is also one reason esports got mainstream attention.

The Game

League of Legends falls in the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game genre. It was mainly inspired by Warcraft III, which was a huge hit at the time, and League of Legends has a similar touch to it. Riot Games developed and published the game back in October 2009 and the game has seen some major gameplay changes and upgrades since. The main reason for this simple game to be a massive hit in the market is that it delivers a premium competitive gaming experience and it is free-to-play.

How League of Legends Mid Lane Meta is Changing

In the game, you take control of in-game characters called “champions” in a five versus five battle on an arena. The main objective of the game is to destroy the enemy structure called the “nexus” while defending yours. You will need to upgrade your champion’s abilities and buy items to outplay and defeat your enemies in the process. It really seems simple on paper but variating champion stats and item stats, and player skill levels make the game one of the most competitive ones out there.

League of Legends also has a few game modes as well. The Summoner’s Rift and The Howling Abyss are currently the main game modes and other fun game modes like Ultra Rapid Fire (URF) are also featured occasionally. However, Summoner’s Rift is the standard game mode for the game as it is the default map for the ranked plays and all the competitive plays. The latest added game mode is Team Fight Tactics (TFT) which is an auto battler mode similar to Dota Auto Chess.

The beauty about the game is that it features a fictional universe and lore knitted around each champion and skin-line. It is set in the world of Runeterra and every champion has their own backstory. This opens up opportunities for the developers and fans themselves to embrace this lore and become creative. This is the main reason why League of Legends is famous for some of the best cinematics in the gaming world. Riot Games has also given birth to some amazing music and some bands like Pentakill and K/DA and there is more stuff to come. A League of Legends animated series is set to come in the near future along with some single-player games spin-off games based on the same universe.
