Riot has officially confirmed that the 2022 League of Legends World Championship will be taking place in North America across four different cities. The news was officially confirmed by the LCS commissioner in an interview with League of Legends content creator, Travis Gafford.
Neither the venues nor the exact cities for the World 2022 have been confirmed yet, but this is still extremely exciting news for all the League of Legends fans in North America. The region hasn’t hosted a League of Legends World Championship since 2016!
We all know that the League of Legends World Championship 2020 and League of Legends World Championship 2021 were both affected because of the rise of COVID-19. The Worlds 2020 was originally supposed to take place in China, but then the location got changed to Shanghai. To minimize the risk of the spread of COVID-19, the entire event had to take place at the same venue. Similarly, Worlds 2021 was also supposed to take place in China, but the location has been changed yet again. Worlds 2021 will be happening later this year in Europe.
The exact locations for the events have still not been made public as of yet, but there’s a great chance that the entire championship might take place at the same venue again because of the new Delta variant of COVID-19. Let’s hope that COVID-19 stops being a problem in 2022 so that the events in North America are able to progress according to plan.
Some players are speculating that Riot might decide to move the League of Legends World Championship 2022 to China as the region has the largest player-base and some of the strongest competitive teams. Even if Riot decides to go through with its plan for 2022, 2023 is surely going to be China’s year. Though we do have the information that Worlds 2022 will be taking place across four different cities, Riot might decide to stick to just one location again if the COVID-19 situation worsens.
