The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational is back

The League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational returns, Riot Games announced it. Last year due to Covid-19 the event was canceled but this year it will return thanks to the effort of Riot Games. The event will be held in Reykjavík, Iceland, in 2021 with a new format.

This is not the only important news, in fact Verizon has been named Official 5G Sponsor of the global events of League of Legends and VALORANT. The telecommunications giant had previously sponsored various tournaments in the past.

The event will take place from 6 to 22 May in the Laugardalshöll arena. As you can imagine, the event will have no live audience and the teams will go into quarantine upon arrival in Iceland.

Riot Games has announced that the play-in will be eliminated. The play-in were a kind of qualification for the lowest teams that by winning them had the chance to participate in the tournament. This is a format used in many other eSports tournaments.

Riot revealed that MSI will have three phases. The first will divide 12 teams into groups of four. Each group will play the best of one, double Italian round. The top two teams per group will advance.

In the second phase, the six teams will face each other in an Italian double round. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs. The third phase will be the best of 5 match, obviously starting from the semifinals and then the final.

In the press release Riot Games added that Verizon will become the new partner for all global tournaments in League of Legends and VALORANT. According to the release, the partnership will be focused on 5G connectivity.
