An incredibile news arrives from Germany. In fact, Schalke 04 has announced that it may be forced to sell the eSports division. The German soccer team has a team in the League of Legends European championship, the LEC.
Schalke 04 are known for being the only football team to have a LOL team in the LEC. PSG has a team of Dota 2 but in the Chinese league. Many football teams have FIFA and PES teams instead. But why could Schalke 04 be forced to give up their place in the LCS? Tim Reichert, Managing Director for Schalke 04 Esports revealed this in a direct twitch.

“Due to having to face a possible relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga and not knowing when fans will be able to come back to the stadium, the club needs to look into all options to secure additional funding.”
Reichert has specified that the club has no intention of doing so, but for economic reasons he could be forced to make this move. “It?s important to note that the club does not want or have to sell the LEC slot. But there are possible future scenarios in which this move would be necessary. “

Unfortunately Schalke 04 is last in the Bundesliga and is really one step away from relegation in fact they have 8 points from the safety zone and have only won 1 game in the whole season. Relegation would mean losing a lot of money and therefore not having enough budget to keep the team in League of Legends LEC.
Schalke are not in the top tier areas even in League of Legends but they are also not too far off being sixth with 5 wins and 6 losses. The news was published on l?Equipe and was followed by a press release from the club which basically explains the possible reasons for leaving League of Legends.
It would be very sad if Schalke 04 would be forced to withdraw from the LEC league but maybe this will offer the chance to a bigger football team to jump in and take the place of the German team?
